Authorities in Akron, Ohio, are investigating the murder-suicide of a local firefighter who allegedly killed his social worker fiancée in the presence of her two children from a previous relationship. According to reports from the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office, local police officers found the body of 35-year old Olivia Hamey when they responded to a 911 call made by the victim’s 11-year-old daughter who had called the police after hearing the couple fighting before she then heard shots being fired.
According to reports from the local News 5 television network, police officers responded to the call from Olivia’s daughter at around 2am on Thursday 11th April. When they arrived at the scene, they found the social worker dead in the basement of the family home, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Speaking to police officers upon their arrival at the murder scene, the 11-year-old girl confirmed that she heard shots being fired after her mother and her fiance, 35-year old Demetrius T’Juan Butler, were having an argument.
Following the sound of the shots after silence had fallen, Olivia’s daughter found her mother unresponsive in the basement of the family home.
Her seven-year-old brother was also at home when the murder occurred.
Both children were placed in the custody of the Summit County Children’s Services before being placed in their father’s care.
After shooting Olivia, Demetrius T’Juan Butler is alleged to have fled the home the couple shared and gone to his mother’s house. Upon arrival and disclosing what he had done, his mother called 911 and informed an operator that her son just killed his fiancee.
Demetrius’ mother then handed the phone to her son, who ignored the operator’s plea to put his gun away and said he he was instead going to kill himself too.
Police officers were immediately dispatched to the incident. Upon arrival at 2:20am, they found the 35-year-old Demetrius standing in his mother’s driveway holding a handgun.
As officers approached him, he put the gun to his chest and pulled the trigger.
He was transported to Akron City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m.
Speaking to local TV network News 5, a friend and colleague of Olivia’s described how happy the couple seemed and just how much she will be missed as a social worker. It was also revealed how Demetrius and Olivia were planning to get married next year.
